EPIC GAMES wants to Bring the Store to Android

Epic Games CEO believes cross-play between platforms will benefit the gaming industry

Epic Games challenges Steam's dominance as a digital distribution platform through the Epic Games Store. One of their strategies is to offer free games and exclusive games.

In May 2020, they also launched several new features on EGS, including modding and a refund system.

In an interview with GameSpot, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed their difficulties with dealing with Steam. He also discussed Epic Games' plans regarding EGS in the future. One of their plans is to launch the Epic Games Store on Android and iOS. Sweeney believes that the cross-play feature between platforms will benefit the gaming industry. Therefore, he is interested in providing EGS on the mobile platform.

“We want to bring the Epic Games Store on iOS in the future, and we will definitely make it available on Android,” Sweeney said, quoted by GameSpot. “We think this strategy is a good way to help the industry grow. Not only that, but entering the mobile ecosystem can also help Epic as a game developer to grow the Fortnite audience and learn how to operate the  game distribution platform on PC and Android." He then added that the Epic Games Store will also be open to third-party developers, just as they did with Unreal Engine and various Epic Online services.

This isn't the first time Epic Games has revealed its plans to bring EGS to mobile devices, particularly Android. In 2018, in an interview with Game Informer, Sweeney said that they would provide EGS for PC and Mac in 2018 before launching the digital game store on Android and iOS in 2019. Unfortunately, after 2019 has passed, EGS is not yet available for mobile devices. However, Sweeney and Epic still seem interested in bringing the EGS to mobile devices.

The proof, in October 2019, Epic Games provided an update for the Fortnite Launcher. With this update, the launcher can not only be used to download Fortnite updates, but also a digital distribution store. On Android, you can find other digital stores besides Google Play, such as Samsung's Galaxy Store. However, the same cannot be done on iOS.
